Its funny how the guy who just wants more oil says theres oil everywhere, when all that would do is deplete all reserves quicker. And the engineer says that there is no oil and its depleting, which seems more likely. Also he does not make it political and spews facts? not nonsense.
By: nickbobj321. on 22 Apr 12, 12:56:20
Well no offence but a few people wont deminish its demand and its depletion. Also the price is controled buy fianacial speculation not price discovery, you would be right if this market was free but it? is not.

Boycott buying fuel till these companies lower their? prices!
By: izaccy. on 15 Apr 12, 09:40:54
By the way Hofmeister says they should have a regulatory independent group of people to plan our oil, because politicians are bought something im sure he as a former CEO of Shell knows a lot about. But then he goes on to say that the independent group will be elected by the Politicians wait a minute so if the corrupt politician chooses? those who should be on the independent committee then whats the difference ? wtf..

Is amazing how both of them remained unbelievably tight lipped about burning carbon emissions and the climate change. They? talked about the potential impact on the environment a little bit due to moving closer to where people live, but NASA´s study on climate change is shocking and it can permanently damage the earth. By the way the government spends billions to artificially keep the oil prices down through oil subsidies, didnt mention that either.
By: izaccy. on 15 Apr 12, 09:21:20
Hofmeister got an incredible naive way of thinking about Oil prices, he thinks is like a cash of gold that is hanging from the trees, and we should get them before the chinese or the indians do, If only it was that? easy.

The US has a 100 plus year supply of natural gas,oil matters not in the long run.................CNG? verses oil is like Red Box verses Block Buster....Any product or service can price its self out of the market....It happens over and over...

Going into this debate, I thought I would be disagreeing with Dr. Patzek quite a bit. He actually surprised me with his honesty and practical solutions, unlike so many eco-nuts on the left. He wasn't sugar-coating new, potential technologies, nor was he shaming everyone with a siren-song about how we're all guilty for being human and destroying the planet. Conservatives and practical people need to embrace his message about our unsustainable, unhealthy,? and anti-social lifestyle.

Both of these guys seem to be missing the EROEI problem - Energy Return on Energy Invested. I think this is incredibly key - even if you start mining shale oil it would return barely enough net energy to justify the task. And we live in a society that is predicated on having not just available energy, but a healthy surplus per capita to keep things? running. That GOING down - no matter how much you Drill Baby Drill.

The former president of Shell slams "special interests influencing Congress" but neglects to mention that the oil, coal and gas companies are the major lobbyists and campaign funders along with the banks. He claims that offshore lands and federal lands could grow US oil, but he fails to disclose the facts he knows-- it is a? teaspoon compared to the 20-24 million barrels a day of USA oil demand. Patzek gives us the truth: This is just like Iraq 2004. We're in deep trouble without a Plan B.

Count on yourself to prepare for Peak Oil. I've been doing it for 5 years... it is possible to cut your total energy use? by 90% and still participate in the current world... MrEnergyCzar

Hofmeister reminds me of the Dick Cheney quote, "The American way of life is not negotiable." It? sounds good, but it's nonsense. His suggestions all amount to amazingly expensive and complex tech that (whether they work or not) WILL raise energy prices (which translate into increased burden on the middle and lower classes) and WILL increase risk to ecosystems (no matter how much risk management is in place - and btw, safety costs extra). It amounts to the same thing as peak oil.
By: ESTAUST01. on 18 Feb 12, 01:41:50
Neither men have obviously heard of SPINTRONICS. It and Lithium-Air Batteries will solve most of our problems. Companies like WESTERN LITHIUM are probably a? good place to park your money. As Jeff Rubin has said, once we reach the full effects of PEAK OIL the ever increasing cost of marine bunker fuel will simply destroy any price advantage of the South American Brines.
By: aangel100. on 17 Feb 12, 22:45:31
That was supposed to be? the "500 largest" fields, from which we get 2/3 of our oil.
By: aangel100. on 17 Feb 12, 22:45:01
For an accurate view of our future, google "german military peak oil report english". Too bad Hoffmeister? doesn't understand the geological facts. All those reserves can't make up for the 500 giant and supergiant fields when they decline. He should read the peer reviewed paper "Giant oil field decline rates and their influence on world oil production" to understand the situation better.
By: vtaable. on 17 Feb 12, 18:45:10
Agree.Use less, maybe improve public transportation like where I live in Tx, so? won't waste gasoline so much.If countries like china kept its petroleum reserves since a long time ago, bought frm many countries, while Hofmeister thought better to produce more n more. What will happen in the future, say the next 20 years? If we buy later, pricy, maybe no more domestic reserves.Unless we could be fossil fuel independent use solar/wind/renewable energy, but maybe the cost is still too high.

31:17 through 32:17 "you'll be suprised how much people can achieve if they start acting alone.." ?
By: nielssolar. on 17 Feb 12, 15:28:08
They agreed that there is a lot of oil/fossil fuels, prices are going up, we have to do energy efficiency, we should go towards a carbon? free planet... They disagree on our ability to get the oil out, and how well governments could work. I do not see their differences very great.

He is incredibly ignorant. He thinks oil availability has nothing to do with geology.?
